Big Diomede Island is best known as the easternmost landmass that is a part of Russia. It is a mere 2.4 miles (3.8 km) to Little Diomede Island, and each island lies on opposite sides of the International Date Line, effectively setting Big Diomede Island ahead by nearly an entire day at any given time. During the winter, the Bering Strait is known to ice over, creating a bridge of ice connecting the islands.
